LCA has been used by the federal government for many decades and recently state and local governments have begun applying this type of analysis and thinking. There’s an opportunity for local and state governments, as well as academic researchers and consultants, to turn best practices and lessons learned into a toolkit that can be used by others embarking on LCA projects.

This workshop will share case studies of city and state level LCA work, as well as work with participants to develop a toolkit for city and state governments. The workshop will guide participants through a SWOT analysis of LCA in local and state government to identify what works and what doesn’t.

From there, participants will help map a toolkit that answers basic questions about applying LCA in local and state government; building internal capacity and buy-in; the value-add to and alignment with other sustainability analysis efforts; and the logistics- how much LCA is needed, who to hire (consultant, university, or staff), and what to expect in terms of time and resources.   After small-group break out sessions, the resulting work will be shared and suggested edits made. The workshop organizers will serve as editors and compile the final product, which will be made available to conference attendees and through other channels such as the Urban Sustainability Directors Network as a resource.
