Understanding the Environmental Consequences of an Action: Consequential Approaches
Pre-Conference Workshop: Understanding the Environmental Consequences of an Action: Consequential Approaches (4 CEUs)
Dr. Sangwon Suh
September 26, 2016, 1PM - 4PM at the Francis Marion Hotel, Charleston, SC
Workshop Description: When
making decisions aiming at reducing the environmental impacts of a firm,
organization, product system or a community, it is important to understand what
course of consequences would potentially follow to materialize the goal. The
difficulty of modeling the consequences of a decision lies on the fact that
such decisions may shift the framework conditions under which the society
favors certain production-consumption behavior. This course will review
available models in the literature on consequential LCA, and discuss the
advantages and disadvantages of each. We will use a few case studies such as
dietary shifts and introduction of a new technology in the market.
Understanding uncertainty in consequential approaches and the concept of
propagating tree will be discussed.
