Pre-Conference Workshop: Publishing Your Work in a Technical Journal (2 CEUs)

Mary Ann Curran

Workshop Description: OK, you completed your study and compiled the results. Now what? Publishing in a technical journal is one of the principal ways scientists share their work with the greater community and get recognized for their efforts. But understanding the publishing process is important to successful publication, and reduced stress. In this workshop, we will discuss how to get your research published in a peer-reviewed technical journal. Mary Ann Curran will share her insights and experience as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, and previously as subject editor for the Journal of Cleaner Production. The workshop is not aimed at discussing how to write a technical paper. Rather, the topics to be covered include selecting the proper journal and audience; the importance of writing a clear abstract and conclusion to make a good first impression; utilizing informal review of a draft manuscript before submitting to the journal; navigating the automated on-line system; understanding the peer review process and how best to respond to review comments. The workshop will allow time at the end for open discussion to answer any individual questions the attendees might have.
